The World Expo 2010 organizers are encouraging residents to hand in their dairy packaging, which will be recycled into more than 1,000 eco-friendly couches in Expo pavilions.

The initiative came from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, Xinmin Evening News and Tetra Pak. A ceremony was held on June 5 to mark the launch of the green campaign, which will cover more than 500 residential communities in Shanghai and run until the end of January.

Each 1.2-meter-long couch needs 856 250mm paper pack. Sterilized packs can also be turned into rubbish bins, stationery and flooring.

The campaign will be promoted in local communities and there will be rewards for participants. This is part of the organizer's green efforts for Expo.
